About Rebecca and Plastic Free July

From humble beginnings in 2011, the award-winning Plastic Free July® campaign is now one of the world’s biggest environmental movements – helping people, communities and organisations reduce plastic waste.

It was started by founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz in Perth, Western Australia.

Rebecca has more than 30 years’ experience in the world of environmental and waste management, community engagement, and sustainability behaviour change she has a unique perspective on the role of individuals in environmental issues. Rebecca has participated in plastic pollution research expeditions in Australia, the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and explored innovative solutions to plastic waste worldwide during a Churchill Fellowship.

Rebecca believes it’s critical to stop the problem at the source and believes we all need to take responsibility to change our throw away culture.

In 2022, an estimated 140 million people from 195 countries took part in Plastic Free July, choosing to refuse single-use plastic and together make a difference.

The campaign is delivered globally by the non-profit Plastic Free Foundation which has a vision of a world without plastic waste.
