Goals

Use the art of sound and story to explore the heart and humanity of the climate movement.

Use the art of sound and story…

Utilise the power of storytelling to connect and educate people who care about the climate crisis and inspire action at a grassroots level. Use sound creatively; gather and integrate audio samples and occasional music to weave in and out of the interviews to create atmosphere and take the listener on a journey with the speakers. Take the time needed in the edit to produce stories that are as listenable as possible and that people will want to hear and share.

…to explore the heart and humanity of the climate movement.

Always bring it back to the humans at the heart of any action. Listeners will be able to connect with others experiencing anxiety around climate change to help reduce their own sense of overwhelm, isolation and/or stress about this enormous problem. Empower people who care about the climate crisis to increase knowledge, courage, agency and action in the climate change space. Showcase inspiring individuals, networks and communities to increase visibility and awareness of climate change solutions and the people who drive them.

To do that we prioritise the following…

Inspire change, rather than fuel fear – Saltgrass shares stories about existing climate action in a positive way, rather than just reiterating the world’s problems. Listeners learn about the real things people are doing right now (not just theory or concepts) at a human scale, on a relatable level. Listeners have the opportunity to hear stories about other people taking action. People who don’t necessarily need billions of dollars, or special qualifications. We strongly agree with the adage “Action is the antidote to despair”.

Walk that fine line – Remaining realistic and interrogating overly idealistic or saccharine visions of a perfect future, while also not succumbing to despair and dystopian fears. The climate crisis is stone cold sobering, but if we lose the ability to laugh, we risk depression and inertia, rather than spirited action. Saltgrass strives to keep it real, but also keep it light.

Anti-hero narrative – We love to focus on community and co-operation, rather than a lone hero or a single solution. We are not evangelical or trying to sell you any single philosophy or point of view. Each episode may focus on one activity or action, but across all of the episodes Saltgrass reveals the greater story of how all the parts matter.

A tasting plate of diversity – in the climate movement, and in a lot of podcasts and shows about climate, it is easy to specialise. Permaculture, tech advancements, renewable energy, electric cars etc. Saltgrass strategically weaves all of these topics together into a tasting plate of diversity, to help the listener understand how people are working on every level. The goal is to help the listener feel part of a movement and that what they have to offer is important, even if it’s just one part of a much larger puzzle.
